The benefits of green tea

November 19, 2015

Did you know green tea at Sushi Wawa is bottomless? Your pot will continue to be refilled for as many sips as you please.

And that’s a good thing in more ways than one, as health experts agree it’s the healthiest beverage on the planet! The Chinese and Japanese have been drinking green tea for centuries, and the benefits are now well known. It can improve cardiovascular health, reduce the risk of cancer and even assist with weight loss.

Green tea comes from the same plant as black tea, but is harvested at a younger age. It is consumed ‘fresh’, while black tea is consumed roasted. Green tea is therefore less processed and retains more of its nutrients and antioxidants than black tea.

  • A quality green tea contains high levels of the potent antioxidant EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) which can help fight free-radical damage associated with chronic diseases such as heart disease and cancer.
  • Green tea helps to lower overall cholesterol levels by reducing ‘bad’ LDL cholesterol and inhibiting blood clot formation.
  • A recent study found that green tea extract helps to deliver greater energy expenditure and fat metabolism, so can aid weight loss.

Drinking three cups of green tea a day gives antioxidant protection. But it does contain about 20mg of caffeine per serve, so be careful if you’re sensitive to caffeine (although, by comparison, your average latte contains around 150mg!).
